Laphroaig’s Strong Characters single malt is the first in the series of limited-edition whiskies, each telling the story of the bold pioneers who shaped Laphroaig's inimitable character. Chapter 1 tells the story of Donald Johnston, the elder of the two brothers who founded the Laphroaig distillery in 1815. He played a pivotal role in shaping Laphroaig into what it is today – a single malt with a uniquely strong character, both in taste and heart.

Matured in a combination of American oak ex-bourbon casks and European sherry-seasoned hogsheads, this single malt blends the distinctive peaty flavour of Laphroaig with notes of sweet desserts, gentle sherry and a touch of subtle spice on the palate. The 33-Year-Old whisky is bottled at a strength of 43.8% for a memorable experience to share with friends.

Laphroaig is one of the few distilleries that still uses a traditional malting floor, and this is where Laphroaig’s Strong Characters starts its life. It begins as malted barley, gently dried and infused by the thick smoke from our signature cold smoking process in our ancient peat kilns. It's then brought together with the crisp waters of the Kilbride Stream, one of Islay's unique natural features, before being distilled. The spirit is matured in American oak ex-bourbon casks and European oak sherry-seasoned hogsheads for 33 years, bringing a complex dimension to Laphroaig’s classic style.

Barley and Water

NOSE Notes of crème brûlée, stewed rhubarb and apple with custard. Creamy soft fudge is followed by heather honey, freshly baked sourdough bread and a briny sea spray. PALATE The gentle sherry influence has added notes of fruit cake and subtle spice. FINISHThe peat element reveals savoury aromas of smoked ham, cured mackerel, and a herbal, almost grassy smoke. A splash of water brings forth more prominent notes of peat smoke.
